A Jerwood Encounters exhibition curated by Photoworks
Proposals invited from early career artists
Deadline 5pm, 15 July 2013
Working in partnership, Jerwood Visual Arts and Photoworks invite submissions of existing or proposed work for inclusion in a Jerwood Encounters exhibition curated by Photoworks and showing at Jerwood Space, London in November 2013.
Photoworks curates, commissions and publishes new writing on photography and produces exhibitions, books and events including the Brighton Photo Biennial. The Photoworks Annual is published every Autumn. Pairing established names with emerging talent, it provides a platform for existing and newly commissioned work by writers, photographers and artists.
The exhibition will present new commissions and/or existing work by three emerging artists/photographers relating to ‘Family Politics’ – the curatorial theme of the first issue of Photoworks Annual which will launch alongside the exhibition.
Curatorial Theme: Family Politics
As a subject, the family is both private and public: the site of intimate inter-personal relations and a social construct subject to public and political pressures. This relationship is mirrored in examples of family photography. The majority of family pictures serve essentially private functions, accruing meaning through their relationship to the memories, experiences and histories of individuals. However, the family is also the subject of public photographic representation and contestation largely through digital media and ‘over sharing’. This involves a wide variety of practices, including representations in the mass media, art and advertising.
Both Photoworks Annual and the exhibition will be open to the expanded way in which photography is being used today. Work submitted for the exhibition may include approaches not specific to photography (eg sculpture, film, drawing, tapestry) but should draw on a photographic language and reference points.
Submissions are sought from UK-based practitioners who are within five years of graduating or setting up their practice.
