Other Places: Bull, Howse & Boyd @ The Old Fire Station Oxford

12 July – 9 August 2013

High House @ The Old Fire Station Oxford

High House Gallery is pleased to bring together three dynamic young painters – TOM HOWSE, LINDSEY BULL & GABRIELLA BOYD. These are powerful and individual artistic voices featuring together for the first time in a group exhibition that takes us in to a realm of dreams, fantasy and vivid imagination. Figures and scenes drift enigmatically between the real and unreal; sensations are evoked that lie between playful and disturbing; new worlds may be dreamlike or fantastic.

The distinct and highly individual world of Tom Howse is populated by the strange and surreal; figures or objects are monumentalised to bestow them with a greater power, albeit irrelevant and superficial. His absurd and inadequate attempts to make sense of the world creates something that is mysterious, raw and primal,
Presenting figures that are often masked or concealed Lindsey Bull draws upon a lexicon of imagery from witchcraft to the occult. The known world slips away leaving fragmentary images that rest between the seen and the hidden. Figures are often in some way concealed, enacting undefined movements; they are in flux, fleetingly tangible, yet at the same time abstracted and unknowable.
Gabriella Boyd’s enigmatic works ultimately stand between being light and playful and something that is more disturbing. An overt playfulness presented through bold pattern and bright colour is finely balanced by melancholic or erotic undercurrents that are never far below the surface. Tight theatrical settings invite the viewers exploration of the canvas leaving the private emotions of the characters fully exposed.
