Chapters: A Life in Leeds
An exhibition documenting and celebrating the East Street Arts 2012-13 Targeted Learning Project.
Launch Day / Evening 30th July 2013, Union 105
Presented by East Street Arts and Union 105
Since September 2012 East Street Arts and Union 105 have produced, in collaboration with adult groups across various Leeds venues, a creative course tailored to meet the needs and aspirations of the participants. We have worked closely with people whose voices are often unheard, communicating their ideas through visual means. The aim of the Targeted Learning Project is to boost self-confidence, enhance communication and highlight group and individual work whilst teaching new creative skills.
This exhibition celebrates everything that has been achieved throughout the year.
The Targeted Learning Project is a new strand of funded community learning. We aim to engage hard to reach groups, with an added element of mentoring and one-to-one tutoring, and also an element of independent learning on the part of the participants.
This year each course focused on one theme that the participants and tutor identified as being of particular interest to each group. These themes included well being, positive aging, active living, genealogy and cultural issues. These themes were then explored through various creative activities including print-making, gardening, bookmaking, photography and textile based work.
Six communities were the focus of this year’s ‘Chapters’ project, namely:
Chapeltown, Seacroft, Osmondthorpe, Armley, Holbeck and South Leeds.
We hoped that, by the end of the project, participants left with a greater sense of self-worth and a positive view of their own skills and abilities. We certainly had a lot of fun in the process!
Venue: Union 105
