Lunchtime Talk: Personal Influences and Current Practice
Friday 18 October, 1pm–1:30pm
M Shed Exhibition Gallery, 02 Floor
Please join Carolyn Hassan, director of Knowle West Media Centre, as she shares
some of her early influences; photographers who explored different approaches to
portraiture, and how they have helped shape her understanding of the power of the
photographic portrait. £2 on exit. Meet in the exhibition gallery. No need to book.

Sandy Nairne: The Photographic Portrait Prize
Tuesday 22 October, 6pm–7:30pm
Viewing in sequence the very large number of photographic portraits submitted to
the competition is an intense experience. More than 5,000 actual prints from around
the world are presented anonymously without any knowledge of the photographer’s
identity, from which only 60 are selected.
Speaking about the competition and subsequent exhibition, Sandy Nairne, director
of National Portrait Gallery, London will give an insight into the process behind the
selection and display.
Ticket price £5/£4 conc. Booking essential through M Shed Shop. Tel 0117 352 6600.
Exhibition entry from 5pm.
Lunchtime Talk: Facing the Subject: Aspects of Contemporary Portrait
Photography
Friday 25 October, 1pm–1:30pm
M Shed Exhibition Gallery, 02 Floor
Please join Dr Dorothy Rowe, Senior Lecturer, History of Art, University of Bristol as
she discusses how portrait photography has exerted fascination on the viewer since
early invention. What does it mean to be photographed nude? What are the viewing
dynamics between photographer, sitter and viewer?
£2 on exit. Meet in the exhibition gallery. No need to book.
John Tonks: The Empire Project
Wednesday 30 October, 6pm–7:30pm
In conversation with Jon Tonks, a featured photographer from Bath. Jon travelled
across the Atlantic Ocean to document four overseas territories of the United
Kingdom: Ascension Island, St. Helena, Tristan Da Cunha and the Falkland Islands.
These are among the last vestiges of the British Empire, which, at the height of its
power and breadth, was the empire ‘on which the sun never sets.’ Giving an insight
into life in these remote places, this event coincides with the launch of his first book
that documents the project.
Ticket price £5/£4 conc. Booking essential through M Shed Shop. Tel 0117 352 6600.
Exhibition entry from 5pm.
