Water Monument – A Public Artwork Proposal

The Water Monument touring exhibition will show selected entries for a fantasy public artwork commission.  Whilst satirizing the present lack of funding in the public and art sectors, at the same time it releases artists’ imaginations from the usual constraints demanded by reality.

Call Out

Water Monument – A Public Artwork Proposal

Tenders are invited for an important public art commission initiated by Nomoneyforart Town Council to celebrate the significance of water to the town – its spectacle, preciousness, curative powers, industry, or even waste – in an exciting and innovative way.

This is a unique opportunity to propose a significant artwork unhindered by budgetary constraint (there is none), cautious committees (there are none) or health and safety issues (irrelevant), for a site of your choosing.

Applicants selected will then develop their idea into a compelling form – all media accepted including artist impressions, macquettes, working models, digital imagery, audio etc.  After FaB, the exhibition of these artworks/proposals will tour to other watery venues. The viewing public will vote for the monument they are most disappointed never to have.

Entries and How it Works

Please send us a brief outline of your Water Monument idea – its potential form, inspiration and rationale, and a specified site if you have one  – in no more than 300 words. Include sketches and/or images to illuminate if you wish. Remember there are no budget, health and safety nor practical limitations – the real thing will never exist!

We are looking for imaginative, radical and wide-ranging concepts interpreting ‘monument’ in any way possible and impossible.

Include with your Water Monument entry a few words describing your practice along with a cv and 3 images of (or links to) some recent work.

Please incorporate all text and mages into a single pdf and email this to

Deadline for applications is 16th March 2014.
