On until 26 March at the RWA

The Identity Season – On display until 26th March*

The RWA opened up 2014 with a set of themed exhibitions exploring the concept of identity and portraiture.

At the core of this series is Oneself As Another, a major exhibition curated in partnership with London-based bo.lee projects, which brings together a select group of painters, sculptors and photographers from the UK and USA whose work explores what defines an individual’s sense of ‘self’.
The exhibition includes works by great 20th century figures such as Lucien Freud and Francis Bacon alongside leading South West based artist Ione Rucquoi’s Sanctae.

This dramatic and moving piece provides a space of reflection, consisting of an architecturally-devised space within the gallery inhabited by larger than life photographic images of naked, female subjects, adorned with individually painted gold-leaf halos.
Idols and Illusions showcases photographic images from the Golden Age of Cinema, including a number of previously unseen vintage prints, kindly lent by The John Kobal Foundation archives.
Actors and Artifice, an exhibition drawn from the internationally renowned holdings of the University of Bristol Theatre Collection. This intimate exhibition has been selected from over 100 paintings depicting actors, directors and theatre professionals and explores the layers of identity that exist within the construct of the theatre, examining the idea of performance and costume.
Likenessesan exhibition of photographs by Judith Aronson, an acclaimed American photographer. Over the course of thirty years, Aronson has documented writers, artists and actors, including Saul Bellow, Seamus Heaney and Salman Rushdie, creating intimate portraits of these literary giants.

In addition we also have a selection of stunning portraits on display from the RWA’s own collection.
