Situations – Public Art Now

Public Art Now / 2014

The face of public art is changing. Over the past ten years, orthodox artistic approaches to working outside the confines of the gallery or museum have been challenged by a new wave of artists who are provoking us to see the world anew.

Their works unsettle rather than authenticate place identity; disrupt and intrude into the everyday rather than embellish; occupy and contest use of public space, rather than predetermine its design. They encourage us to get lost and challenge preconceived ideas about where art belongs and when and where it might take place.

Public Art Now is a national programme of talks, films, publications and workshops, devised by Situations with our partners, dedicated to showcasing internationally significant new forms of public art.

Public Art Now: Live Events

We will be bringing internationally recognised artists and producers in public art to Bristol for a series of conversations and lectures which will be live streamed internationally.

Public Art Now: Workshops

Organised through group discussion and participation, these day-long workshops will each provide attendees with the opportunity to learn new skills and to gain knowledge about producing and evaluating new artforms.

Out of Time, Out of Place: Public Art (Now)

Edited by Claire Doherty this survey publication will be published by Art / Books in association with Situations and Public Art Agency Sweden and the European Network of Public Art Producers in October 2014. The book will bring together over 40 of the most influential public artworks to have emerged in the past decade.

Public Art Now: Film interviews

A programme of ten film interviews with international artists and curators featured in the survey publication.

Pubic Art Now: Travel Bursaries

Aimed at emerging artists and curators, the scheme offers travel bursaries and free tickets for 16 individuals to attend the live events and selected workshops and to share their experiences on the blog.
