EM14: Arrivals

EM14: Arrivals

25th October 8th November 2014
Launch Night: Friday 24th October, 18.00-20.00

Surface Gallery announces the exhibition of its sixth East Midlands Graduate Project, EM14. The East Midlands Graduate Project supports Fine Art graduates across the region as they make the transition from university to professional art world. EM14: Arrivals is the culmination of a four week residency in Surface Gallery’s recently refurbished top floor project space. Eight graduates have been commissioned to produce new work, and will exhibit an eclectic mix of painting, multimedia installation and sculpture.

This year’s Arrivals are Julia Kiely (Derby), Megan Lynch (Lincoln), Tina Mirsharifi
(Derby), Ali MorganTansley (Nottingham), Tony Moss (Nottingham), Christine Stevens(Trent), Alex Wallis (Loughborough), and Sarah Wilson (Loughborough). Ash, video, theplayful use of latex, a fascination with porcelain and leather, and an exploration of motherhood using balloons and hosepipe: this year’s exhibition promises a vibrant mix that both arouses the senses and stimulates the intellect.

Each of the artists has built on the successes of their university achievements, and has developed and extended the range of their creative practices. The exhibition promises to be a visual celebration of the creative process, and an examination of artistic practice. And like last year, we are hoping for a varied and engaging exhibition with a few surprises along the way.

“Openings and private views of art exhibitions”, as the Nottingham Post wrote of last
year’s EM13, “should always spring a surprise or two”. Our visitors did not leave
disappointed, and we are sure that this year’s new arrivals will provide some surprises of their own. EM14: Arrivals will launch 24th October at 18.00 in the gallery, and will run in conjunction with the Bob Robinson Retrospective, which will be held in the project space. Mik Underwood’s ‘Knot My Problem’ will continue to run in our alternative exhibition space, Le Loovre. As always, there will be a donations bar, with ales provided by local brewery, Springhead.

Supported using funding by Arts Council England.
