Call for Artists – Old City Residency 2015
A month long residency in the gallery at Centrespace.
Followed by a two week exhibition.
Practicing artists from all disciplines are invited to apply with a proposal to use the gallery as a temporary studio space from 4 – 30 of August 2015.
The project brief invites a contemporary response to the area around the gallery: known as The Old City (as designated by the Walled City Walk map) that will inspire new work.
In 2014 The ‘Walled City Walk’ map, a guide to the Old City was launched in the gallery. The Map was designed and printed by the Centrespace Letterpress Collective and accompanied by a set of ‘Trader Postcards’. 10,000 copies of the map were distributed and funding was secured for a further reprint.
The Old City Residency is an opportunity for an artist to build on the success of the map: to bring a fresh insight and share with the public a new interpretation of the area.
Artists are encouraged to consider the multi layered historical, commercial, social and psycho-geographic possibilities of the Old City from a contemporary perspective.
During the residency the artist will be expected have at least 2 ‘open studio’ days to share ideas and work in progress with invited visitors and the public.
The Exhibition: 3 – 17 September
The content of the exhibition should be the visual and documented results of the residency presented in any way the artist wishes in the context of their current practice.
During the exhibition the artist will be required to offer a series of events such as a workshop, guided walks and an artist’s talk.
Networking & support
There will be opportunities that introduce the artist to the Centrespace community members and associated networks in the city and beyond. Support will be available throughout the residency from the gallery manager (who is also the lead artist) and the resident members gallery committee.
