Theaster Gates – Sanctum
Bristol set for 576 hour continuous programme of performances
Chicago-based artist Theaster Gates’ latest project invites visitors to ‘hear Bristol’ via hundreds of live events.
This autumn for 24 days straight a 14th Century English Heritage site in Bristol will offer a unique opportunity to experience the city’s performers, musicians and bands.
The ambitious Sanctum project is led by renowned Chicago-based artist Theaster Gates. Recently placed 44th in ArtReview’s Power 100, earlier this year he won the Artes Mundi Prize, notably sharing the £40,000 prize money with his fellow shortlisted artists.
Urban renewal is the focus of much of Gates’ work, and his latest offering is no exception. The aim of the project is to allow Bristol to ‘hear itself’ via hundreds of performances, taking place day and night at a temporary structure housed within the iconic Temple Church, which was left gutted following bombing during the second World War.
Visitors can look forward to experiencing high profile bands, gospel choirs and even spoken word artists. In an added twist the schedule is being kept a secret – it is up to visitors to discover the diverse range of artistic activity on offer.
The project has been produced by arts commissioning group Situations as part of Bristol’s year as European Green Capital.
Sanctum forms part of the Art Weekender – Bristol & Bath, a three-day celebration of visual arts across both cities also produced by Situations and involving over 35 arts venues, artist-led projects and activities.
Also as part of Sanctum, the artist will be involved in a special event on Saturday 31st October at 7pm. Book now for Theaster Gates associate event at St. George’s, Bristol to celebrate the launch of Sanctum.
Gates is looking for additional performers to take part in the event. If you are an artist, poet, musician, band, choir, or make any kind of performance that involves sound, you can submit proposals to contribute.
The only condition is you must either live in Bristol or be planning to be in the city during the period from 29th October – 21st November 2015.
