Private View: Thursday 10 September 6 – 8pm
Exhibition: 11 September – 3 October 2015
Paul Stolper is pleased to present lino|cut an overview of the linocut in print, including both important historical and newly commissioned works by Peter Blake, Rose Blake, Keith Coventry, Susie Hamilton, Rachel Howard, Gary Hume, Reece Jones, Sol Lewitt, Linder, Jim Medway, Pablo Picasso, Catherine Phelps, Cyril Power, Ray Richardson, Fred Sandback, Donald Sultan and Wayne Thiebaud.
The exhibition will highlight the versatility of the linocut, from the minimal abstract works of Keith Coventry, Fred Sandback and Sol Lewitt to the much more graphic styles of Picasso’s Vallauris linocuts, printed to advertise and celebrate his annual ceramic exhibitions in the 1950’s. Many of the works derive their strength from being printed in a solid black, such as Linder’s Expressionist portrait of ‘Jordan’, and Thiebaud’s ‘Candy Counter’ which drips with light and shadow, as well as Rose Blake’s ‘Gorilla Looking In The Mirror’. In contrast, linocuts such as Cyril Power’s ‘Speed’ and Gary Hume’s ‘Paradise 4’ employ multiple blocks of linoleum to print multiple colours.
