Beep2016 is seeking work for two exhibitions that responds to this years’ theme of ‘This must be the place I never wanted leave.’
Who: Beep (Biennial exhibition of Painting) has been running since 2012 and is a not-for-profit large scale celebration of contemporary painting. This year Beep is FREE to enter and is open to painters from all over the world.
When: 5 Aug – 3 Sept, Swansea, Wales UK & 7 Oct – 5 Nov, Wrexham, Wales, UK
Main Prize £1000 and solo exhibition with elysiumgallery, People’s Prize: £200
Beep is Wales’s only large-scale contemporary international painting exhibition taking place at different venues every two years.
2016 will see the main exhibition tour from Swansea to Wrexham and include satellite exhibitions, events and residencies in and around Swansea, Wrexham and Cardiff.
This year’s theme aims to explore notions of perception, memory and belonging grounded in a place, space or time in the medium of paint. The realisation of this ‘place’ evokes abstract perceptions. Psychological impressions, physical memory, re-imagined and reconstituted fragments develop from deep felt multi-sensory experiences. Investigation into ‘the place I never wanted to leave’ (and may have left, by will or necessity) should offer a profound awareness of the elusive nature of objective reality. Longing for another place and time suggests a longing to restore totality of being.
In the same way a smell, a sound or a sight momentarily transport us to the centre of an experience in place, so can the image. Beep 2016 is seeking artists’ submissions in response to these ideas, reconstructing their own ‘modes of transportation’. The exhibitions will take place in two large venues. The exhibition artists will be selected by elysiumgallery, Swansea and the judges will be artist Shani Rhys James MBE and Jonathan Watkins, Director Ikon Gallery, Birmingham
This year Beep2016 is FREE to enter.
After the selection process if you are one of the artists picked to participate in the Swansea and Wrexham exhibitions you will be required to pay a £25 exhibitions fee which will directly feed straight back into the set up and prize costs. Beep and elysiumgallery are not-for-profit, artist-led organisations.
