Call for Submissions – Installation 2017 Now Open

With support from ACE we are delighted to invite proposals for our annual, unique site-specific installation, as part of the Contains Art exhibitions programme.

The installation slot is made available as the opening exhibition of the Contains Art season. It is open to all artists – there is no local connection requirement (as with some of our other opportunities), though this may be taken into account.

It is a requirement that the exhibitor develop their work in situ, with the expectation of four weeks working on site preceding the opening of the exhibition. During this time the gallery will be closed to the public and the exhibitor will benefit from the opportunity to test their ideas, experiment and formalise their installation.

A fee of £3,000 is entitled for the cover of this period in recognition of the time away from normal practice that this opportunity requires. There is no additional accommodation allowance and artists will be expected to make their own arrangements (though of course, we will help if we can!).

The installation is a visual response to the venue of Contains Art, its gallery space; a repurposed 40 foot shipping container on the East Quay, Watchet, Somerset.

The installation will be exhibited for approximately the four weeks of April 2017 (dependent on school holidays etc).

What we are we looking for:

Exhibition proposals should address the central aim of the Contains Art programme which is that participants should explore their creativity in new ways or within a new context – to migrate their practice in a hitherto unexplored setting.

We not wish to be overly prescriptive; Contains Art wishes to promote excellence in contemporary creative practice whilst continuing to support and nurture creativity in West Somerset. We wish to offer diversity in terms of practice discipline and medium. All proposals will therefore be considered with regard to these aims and achieving a balance in the content of the overall exhibition programme.

In summary, we are interested in receiving proposals that do one or more of the following:

  • Respond directly to the space – the container gallery.
  • Foster accessibility and audience engagement; use the installation as a way to widen audience access to different artforms.
  • explore and exploit the physical limitations of the space, through visual/spatial means, whilst retaining the existing gallery access. Create an immersive installation.
  • Enable the artist to explore their creativity in new ways.

Artists/exhibitors must explain clearly how you and your practice will benefit from the opportunity.

Our offer to artists/groups:

The programme will be administered to offer as much support as we can facilitate. The logistical and financial benefits to participants are:
£3,000 fee entitled for the development of work on site; Free gallery use;
Promotion delivered through Contains Art;
Funded Private View;
Admin support;
Invigilation cover (artists will be asked to invigilate just one day a week usually, with a couple of extra days for community/educational events/holiday cover);
Curatorial and advisory support;
Expenses/materials allowance.

In return, exhibitors will be expected to take part in a ‘Container Conversation’ (interview-style discussion with small audience); to be filmed for a video-short as part of an ongoing Contains Art, ACE funded, project; to fulfil an educational event in parallel with the exhibition. In addition, we would expect the successful exhibitor to engage with our curatorial team; and agree to commission rate of 20% where this is relevant (plus 2.75% for card sales).

The selection process:
All proposals will be considered on merit by a specially convened panel of established creative professionals. The panel will include representatives from Contains Art’s Board, our curatorial team and representatives from the wider Somerset/South West art world. The panel will be asked to recommend two-four exhibitions to the Board of Contains Art. At this stage the panel/Board may wish to invite some applicants to discuss their ideas in person, if they deem it useful/necessary.
To be considered for the installation slot, please complete the short submission form, giving details of the exhibitor/s, and the work proposed. Applications are open to

individual artists, collaborations between artists, groups of artists or curators working with artists.

Contains Art

Contains Art is a brand new arts venue on the quayside in Watchet, a small harbour town on the coast of West Somerset. Contains Art opened on 7th July 2013, following months of planning and a final five weeks of hard work, by a largely volunteer workforce, to convert three shipping containers into a smart gallery space and four bright, comfortable working studios. Work continues to enhance the exteriors of the containers and the courtyard space enclosed by them to support site specific projects and community events. Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

Contains Art is a place for creative people to work, learn and meet informally. There are a range of opportunities for practitioners to exhibit and sell work and to develop professionally. Visitors are very welcome. The gallery is open during exhibitions and it is frequently possible to visit artists at work in their studios.
