Call out for artists in South West England for a new touring exhibition

Outside In, Arts & Health South West (AHSW) and Bristol Museum & Art Gallery are working in partnership on a new touring exhibition, ‘Alternative Visions: Undiscovered Art from the South West.’ Submissions are NOW OPEN for artists, who align themselves with Outside In’s ethos, to enter work for possible inclusion in the show.
The project is happening thanks to a successful Arts Council England Strategic Touring Programme bid, which will enable the organisation and production of a touring exhibition of work by artists who feel excluded from the mainstream art world due to health, disability, social circumstance or isolation. The exhibition will tour to four partner museums in the South West: Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, Falmouth Art Gallery, Poole Museum, and The Wilson in Cheltenham.

Artists who live in south west england who have an online gallery on the Outside In website will be able to submit two pieces of work for possible inclusion in the show. If you don’t have a page, and you feel you meet the Outside In criteria, you can create an online gallery easily by going to the ‘sign up’ tab on the website. Artists who need extra support to submit their work are encouraged to attend one of the scheduled Surgery Days taking place at eight venues across the South West, where you will get help to create an online gallery.

Areas in the South West include: Bath & NE Somerset, Bournemouth, Bristol, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Isles of Scilly, Isle of Wight, North Somerset, Plymouth, Poole, Portsmouth, Southampton, Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Swindon, Torbay, Wiltshire.

TO SUBMIT WORK, log in to your online gallery and go to the image you would like to submit. Underneath the image it will have an ‘edit’ button, so click on this. On the page that opens you can scroll to the bottom where it says ‘would you like to submit your work for the 2016 south west exhibition’ – click the button for yes and press ‘save’. You can choose two images in total to submit for selection. You can change your image selection easily if you want to. You can just unselect the one you have chosen and select a different one instead – remember to press ‘save’. If you have any trouble with this please contact Hannah Whitlock, Outside In Artist Coordinator, on 01243 770 845 or email

The DEADLINE for submissions is 5pm on Friday 4 November 2016.

The touring exhibition will be accompanied by interpretation and educational activities, including a film, audio tour and additional interpretation from participants of Artists First; a group of learning disabled visual artists based in Bristol.

Here is an extract from the Terms & Conditions page:

The creator accepts that the art works submitted can be made available for sale on the Outside In website if they wish. Prices are never shown on the website and will only be given to a potential buyer once an Outside In team member has spoken to the artist and/or carer or support worker

• When sales are made through the online shop, website or at exhibitions, Outside In will take a 30% commission plus VAT. Outside In will speak to the artist about the price of their work and discuss the commission and how this affects the price. The aim is that the artist will receive the amount of money from the sale that they originally wanted.

As an example:

If the artist wishes to receive £100 for their artwork, it will be for sale for £155 which includes the 30% commission and VAT

If the artist wants the work for sale for £100 including the commission, they will receive £66 from the sale once the commission and VAT has been taken off.
