Without Walls 2017

Commissioning and touring opportunities for new outdoor work in 2017

Without Walls invites artists and companies from any discipline to request support for the creation and touring of new outdoor work for presentation and touring in 2017.

In the past ten years Without Walls has supported the development of over 100 ambitious outdoor shows from UK artists, across a range of art forms and genres, including theatre, dance, circus, visual and audio installations, music, opera, digital and interactive arts and many more. Many of these projects are now touring widely in the UK and internationally.

The primary purpose of this Open Call is to select a programme for 2017. However, we are looking ahead in our plans and are considering making an application to ACE for NPO funding. Whilst we can not be sure of the outcome of this application, becoming a NPO would enable us to take a longer view of our programme planning – and for this reason we are also inviting you to tell us about projects that you have in development for later years, including 2018-2020.

We realize that you may not have detailed proposals at this stage but we are keen to look at plans as far in advance as is realistic so it is helpful to start discussions at an early stage.

We are particularly interested in receiving proposals which explore:

1Innovation, risk and new boundaries
We are keen to support artists to experiment with new ideas and techniques, digital technology and ambitious material. All work we support must meet this priority.

2Small-scale work
Small-scale work from any discipline but that is suitable for playing on a variety of settings both urban and rural.

3Culturally diverse and deaf and disabled artists
We are committed to supporting work that is led by and features culturally diverse & deaf and disabled artists.

4Work with a focus on innovative audience engagement
A key focus for Without Walls is on encouraging new audiences for our events and festivals. We want to support original projects that will reach new audiences and invite artists to create new work with a clear focus on attracting new audiences in general, or from specific communities if applicable.

Additionally we are keen to support the following:
– Work for families and children that demonstrate innovation and excellence
– Outdoor circus that explores the dramatic possibilities of circus technique
